MSS 262 - Audrey M. Stier Collection

Biographical Note

 

            Audrey Moulin Stier, a native of New Orleans, was the daughter of Henry Clay Stier and Leila Moulin Stier and the sister of Miriam, Harry, and Greta Stier, Marjorie Stier Rawls, Lois Stier Butler, and Phyllis Stier Wall.  She earned a scholarship to Newcomb College and graduated from New Orleans Normal School.  She then taught school until November 1942, when she entered the Navy as a "WAVE."  In Boston Miss Stier was in the first class of Navy women aerologists at MIT.  After graduation, she served as aerological officer at various U.S. Naval Stations and retired with the rank of Lieutenant Commander.

 

            After leaving the Navy, Miss Stier earned a graduate degree from LSU and returned to the New Orleans Public School System as a teacher of homebound children.  She and her sisters loved to travel, and they toured the United States, Canada, Mexico and Europe.  Miss Stier died on June 20, 2006, in Denver, Colorado, at the age of 95.  She was survived by twenty-seven nieces and nephews and their descendants.
