Job Competencies for Louisiana and Special Collections Students
Ability to locate and reshelve LACOL materials for patrons using the Library of Congress Classification system
Learn basic set of “reference” competencies (e.g. able to help patrons use online finding aids, find material in Louisiana Collection, basic searching in America’s Historical Newspapers and America’s News Database).
Assisting patrons in the basic use of the UNO Library Catalog [OPAC] and its databases
Assisting in retrieving and re-shelving Special Collections materials
Monitoring patrons for proper usage of archival materials
Staffing desk when scheduled alone.
Assisting Library staff person at the Louisiana Collection Desk as directed (minding the desk, pulling collections, familiarizing patrons with Reading Room procedures, etc.)
Answering the phone and take a message or provide open hours or other basic information
Compiling, using MS Word, Excel documents
Basic familiarity with the Workflows Cataloging System for minimal use such as searching for titles, entering items used, etc.
Any special assignments such as scanning, shelf reading, preparing, printing labels, filing, processing books, magazines (detection strips, property stamps, etc.)
