General Borrowing Policies

Borrowing Privileges

UNO Undergraduate Students

  • UNO Undergraduate Students may have up to 120 books checked out at any one time.
  • The checkout period is for three weeks with unlimited renewals until the end of the semester when all library items must be returned.
  • Materials that have been placed on hold by another patron cannot be renewed.
  • The checkout period for CDs and videos is seven (7) days, with one renewal if the material is not placed on hold by another patron.
  • Student Government DVDs may be checked out for seven days only; there are no renewals.
  • Reserve material checkout periods vary (e.g. two hours in library only, overnight, three days, or seven days) according to what a professor designates.
  • Restricted circulation materials (bound and loose periodicals) do not circulate to undergraduate students.

Borrowing Privileges

UNO Graduate Students

  • UNO Graduate Students may have up to up to 120 books checked out at any one time.
  • The checkout period is for one semester, when all library items must be returned. Books must be returned at the end of every semester. Graduate students are allowed to check out books for the semester with the understanding that any book requested by another patron is to be returned within a week of being contacted. The due date in the library system will be changed once an item is requested, and an email sent to the current user.
  • Any book requested by another patron is to be returned within a week of being contacted by Circulation.
  • Materials that have been placed on hold by another patron cannot be renewed.
  • The checkout period for CDs and videos is seven (7) days, with one renewal if the material is not placed on hold by another patron.
  • Reserve material checkout periods vary according to what a professor designates.
  • Student Government DVDs may be checked out for seven days only; there are no renewals.
  • Bound and loose periodicals circulate for three hours to graduate students.
  • Other restricted circulation items (bibliographies) may be checked out for three days.
  • Graduate Thesis students are also eligible for a library carrel. Make sure to read the policy on library carrels before applying to ensure that you are eligible.

  • UNO Staff may have up to 120 books checked out at any one time.
  • Staff has an annual due date which ends in the spring semester.
  • Staff has unlimited renewals unless the items have been recalled by another patron. Staff are asked to recognize the need to share limited resources with colleagues and students. To renew items on a Staff account, they must be brought to the Circulation desk. They cannot be renewed online.
  • If another patron has requested an item a Staff member currently has checked out, the Staff member will be sent an email, requesting the item be returned.
  • Materials that have been placed on hold by another patron can not be renewed.
  • The checkout period for CDs and videos is seven (7) days, with one renewal if the material is not placed on hold by another patron.

  • UNO Faculty may have up to 120 books checked out at any one time.
  • Faculty has an annual due date which ends in the spring semester.
  • Faculty have unlimited renewals unless the items have been recalled by another patron. Faculty is asked to recognize the need to share limited resources with colleagues and students. To renew items on a Faculty account, they must be brought to the Circulation desk. They cannot be renewed online.
  • If another patron has requested an item a Faculty member currently has checked out, the Faculty member will be sent an email, requesting the item be returned.
  • The checkout period for CDs and videos is seven (7) days, with one renewal if the material has not been recalled by another patron.
  • Student Government DVDs may be checked out for seven days only; there are no renewals.
  • Bound periodicals circulate for three days to faculty. Loose or current periodicals circulate for three hours to faculty.
  • Other restricted circulation items (bibliographies) may be checked out for three days.
  • Limited circulation of Louisiana Collection materials is available with permission from the department.

Faculty and Proxy - Each faculty member can assign one UNO student or staff member as a proxy. A proxy can check out books as if he/she was the faculty member so items will have an annual due date and be on the faculty member's record. The proxy may also pick up articles or ILL books for the faculty member. The proxy should show his/her own UNO ID when picking up materials at the Circulation desk. The faculty member will need to fill out and sign an application card at the Circulation desk indicating the UNO student's name and the term of coverage, not to exceed one year from the date of application. A "Note" is included on the faculty member's record showing the proxy name and expiration date. Proxy cards will have to be renewed upon expiration.

Retired Faculty

  • All retired faculty must obtain an ID that indicates "Retired Faculty" status in order to check out library materials.
  • Access to online databases is limited to on campus.
  • Retired faculty may have up to 120 items checked out at any time.
  • Most library materials will be due back at the end of each semester.
  • Limited circulation of Louisiana Collection materials is available with permission from the department.
  • To renew items, they must be brought to the Library Services Desk. They cannot be renewed online.
  • If another patron has requested an item a retired faculty member currently has checked out, the library will send an email requesting the item be returned.
  • Retired faculty will have access to Interlibrary Loan.
  • Retired faculty can obtain a reserved carrel for ongoing research as space permits and if the needs of current students are met.

Research and Technology Park borrowers

  • To check out materials from the library, Research and Technology Park borrowers will need a UNO ID, which can be obtained at the University Computer Center room 112. This ID will include a PeopleSoft number and will be designated as "Research Park" on the ID.
  • Complete the Research and Technology Park Borrower Application. Please allow two (2) business days for your account to be created/activated.
  • Privileges include being able to checkout 120 items for 3 weeks, unlimited renewals as long as an item has not been requested by another, and 3 hours for journals. A full explanation of privileges is listed below.
  • The card will expire on the last day of June each year and must be renewed. Borrowers will be directly responsible for fines and lost books.

Special Borrowers

While Special Borrowers are allowed access to the library's online resources in the building, these resources are not available remotely.

Books will not be held for Special Borrowers who have not been issued a library card.

Alumni: Members of the Alumni Association will need an Alumni membership card, along with a picture ID to be issued a UNO Library Special Borrower's card. To register for a free UNO Alumni membership, please visit www.unomatrix.com. To request a Special Borrower's card complete the Alumni Borrower Card Application. A member of the User Services department will contact the applicant when the card is ready for pickup.  Alumni can check out five items at a time for three weeks with one renewal. Alumni may check out books and circulating federal documents from the general stacks and circulating AV and datafiles. Exceptions include student government-purchased DVDs and leisure reading books from the 2nd floor of the Library. While Alumni Association memberships do not expire, the UNO Library's Special Borrower's card needs to be renewed every three years. However, delinquency in returning materials, or charges to the Alumni account, may result in the account being canceled. Any blocks must be cleared in full to reinstate the account. Excessive instances may permanently bar Alumni from using the UNO Library. Emailed notices are sent for overdue materials. The UNO Library is not responsible for misdirected emails.

Ben Franklin High School (Students and Faculty) complete this application for a UNO special borrower card. The UNO Library will notify the patron to come in to receive a special borrower's barcode to be applied to their Ben Franklin ID card. Privileges must be renewed each year. Patrons can check out five books at a time for three weeks with one renewal.

Friends of the UNO Library  Friends in the $50 Best Seller Category can check out three books for three weeks with one renewal. A white Special Borrower's card will be issued for an annual date due every year in January - Friends must renew their membership each year to continue checking out materials. Friends wishing to borrow library books must show proof of membership by presenting their renewal acknowledgment postcard. A Friends of the UNO Library membership application form is located on the Friends of the UNO Library page. Friends memberships can also be paid online.

IELP (Intensive English Language Program) students can check out three books for three weeks with one renewal. We receive a list of student names from the Intensive English Language Program (http://ielp.uno.edu) at the beginning of each session. NOLA_CODE Please complete this form to request a borrower card. You will be notified via email when your card is ready to pick up. Please allow one business day to complete your request. NOLA Code borrowers are permitted to check out computer literacy kits.

Visiting Scholars

Visiting Scholars can acquire privileges once a written letter from the Department Chair has been received and a PeopleSoft number has been obtained. The Chair's letter must state that he/she will assume full, financial responsibility for all library materials used or checked out by the visitor. We also require a start and ending date. If a PeopleSoft number has been obtained, a UNO ID can be issued. If not, a temporary library card will be issued. The Chair's letter will be kept on file.
