Summary:                 Family papers consisting mainly of correspondence, diplomas, photographs, and miscellany.  The bulk of the collection is composed of 540 original photographs (glass and film negatives and paper prints) which have been arranged by subject categories.  Copy prints and negatives made by the UNO Library are identified as such.

Biographical Note

 

John Dieter Schmidt

 

            Born 1855, Bavaria, Germany; died July 26, 1934, New Orleans, La..  John Dieter Schmidt immigrated to the United States in 1870 and became a naturalized citizen in 1886.  He married Anna Schneider of New York State and had three children, John Dieter Jr., Reginald McClure, and Lilah.  An employee of the United States Corps of Engineers, he was also an amateur photographer and probably produced many of the photographs in the collection.

 

Reginald McClure Schmidt

 

            Born 1889, New Orleans, La.; died June 7, 1972, New Orleans, La.  Reginald McClure Schmidt graduated from Tulane University's School of Engineering in 1905.  He was an inspector for the Mississippi River Commission in 1912; an inspector on boat construction for the U.S. War Department in 1915 and 1916; an employee of the U.S. Corps of Engineers from 1918 to 1950.  An amateur photographer like his father, he probably made the photographs in the "Industrial Sites" category, while working as an engineer in Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas.
