Historical Note

Founded by James Sparks in the 1880s, the New Hope Baptist Church at 434 Seventh Street in Gretna, Louisiana is one of the area's oldest black churches.  The church and the activities of its parishioners were models for settings and incidents in the writings of Robert Emmet Kennedy.  For additional information on this subject see article by Sevilla Finley in the "Our Town West Bank" section of the New Orleans Times-Picayune, November 22, 1987.
