Historical Note

The main building of Andrew H. Wilson School was constructed in 1922 to serve white students who resided in the vicinity of Claiborne and Napoleon Avenues, which developed rapidly in response to drainage improvements that occurred during the early years of the twentieth century.  Several additions to the campus were made during the 1920s: a Janitor’s Lodge (1922), a breezeway and a six-room annex (1926), and an eight-classroom wing, variously described as an “addition” and an “annex” (1929).  Taken together, the structures “form an ensemble of intact historic structures that is typical of the New Orleans elementary school campus during the 1920s” (Alice-Anne Krishnan, Narrative History of Andrew H. Wilson Elementary School, New Orleans, Louisiana [New Orleans: R. Christopher Goodwin & Associates for Broadmoor Improvement Association, 2008], quotation p. 11).  Now administered by the Recovery School District (RSD), it is part of the Broadmoor National Register Historic District.

Wilson School sustained damage from Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.  The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) therefore assisted the RSD with remediating the school.  the project included rehabilitating the main building and its addition, demolishing the other structures, and building a 4,000-square-foot addition.
