Materials and cost for 3D printing.
You can print models on our MakerBot 3D printers for free if you bring your own filament. Remember that the machines can only use PLA filament with a diameter of 1.75 mm. You can buy filament online at a cost of around $20-$25 for a 1 kilogram roll. We have had good luck with the Elegoo and Overture brands of filament.
If you don't want to buy a whole roll of filament, you can also use the library's stock of filament at a cost of $0.05 per gram. When you are slicing your project, make a note of the filament weight estimate in the Print Preview. Let the Services Desk know how much filament you used when returning the key, and a charge will be added to your Library Account.
You will then be able to pay the bill online at the link below.
To login to your Library Account, use your 7-digit UNO ID +00 (Example: 123456700). If you have never accessed this account, use the "RESET MY PIN" link on the login page.
Click the RESET MY PIN link and then enter your 7-digit UNO ID number + 00 (example: 123456700). A reset link will be sent to your UNO email account.
Note: There is a $0.50 courtesy fee for each payment.
Removing and clearing extruder jams.
If the correct filament is loaded into the machine properly but filament is still not extruding well, the machine may have a filament jam. Filament jams are usually caused by a small sliver or blob of filament that gets stuck inside the extruder. You will not be able to see inside the extruder, but the most common symptoms of a filament jam are filament that does not extrude at all, or filament that extrudes in very thin threads.
Sometimes filament jams can be cleared by unloading the filament from the machine, trimming the end of the filament, and then reloading the machine. If unloading and reloading the machine does not solve the problem, please let us know right away so we can clean the extruder with the proper tool.
The video below gives you an idea of how the extruder cleaning process works.
