Joseph Bauer, though originally from St. Louis, Missouri, moved to New Orleans at a very young age.  Born in 1848, he attended the New Orleans School of Medicine and graduated from the New Orleans Dental College in 1869, although his education also included time abroad in Paris.  Starting his practice in what was once known as “Attakapas Country”, he began practicing within the city of New Orleans in 1873, and quickly achieved prominence in his field.  Bauer was twice married, first to Miss Mary Thibodeaux in 1867, and then to Miss Hortense Villavaso in XXXX.  In his time a member of the Louisiana Historical Society, the American Dental Association, the Louisiana State Dental Society, and the New Orleans Odontological Society, and the New Orleans Artists’ Association, Mr. Bauer was highly regarded in his field and also respected for his knowledge in matters of art, genealogy, and history.  Joseph Bauer passed on March 8, 1914 and was laid to rest in St. Louis Cemetery No. 3.
