Biographical Note
 

            Josie Arlington was professional name of Mary Anna Deubler (born New Orleans, 1864 (?), died New Orleans, February 14, 1914), a prominent New Orleans madam; worked under names Josie Alton, Josie Lobrano, Josie Lobrano d'Arlington, and Josie Arlington.  Associate of Tom Anderson, state legislator and powerful New Orleans politician, under whose protection and tutelage she acquired considerable wealth.  (For further information, see Alecia Long, The Great Southern Babylon: Sex, Race, and Respectability in New Orleans, 1865-1920 [Baton Rouge: Louisiana State University Press, 2004]).
