Select treasures from the Orleans Parish School Board Collection (MSS 147).

This online exhibit showcases some of the personal letters of Marcus Bruce Christian, who authored "I Am New Orleans and Other Poems", and worked with the Louisiana Negro Writers Project, a program of the Work Projects Administration. During this time he compiled the unpublished manuscript, "The History of the Negro in Louisiana", which can be viewed in our archives. A transcript is available in the Louisiana Digital Library. Correspondence included in this exhibit is mainly between Marcus Christian, Langston Hughes, and Arna Bontemps.

This selection of pages from the Orleans Parish School Board minute books details a variety of both explicit and implicit arguments from 1951 to 1953 for the racial integration of the public school system. The exhibit is a collaboration between the Earl K. Long Library and the UNO Department of History and was created by history graduate student Christina Lawrence.
